Supporting the next generation of highways professionals

At TMP, we’re strong believers that safer, more sustainable highways start with good training and the right support from day one. That’s why it’s been great to work alongside the Highways Academy at Salford College, supporting Year 1 highways maintenance apprentices as they develop real, practical installation skills.

Recently, apprentices from Argyle North West, Cheshire East Council and Tameside Council took part in a hands-on session focused on installing the TMP Mini-Metro Bollard with our Retention Socket system at the Highways Academy’s City Campus.

The session gave apprentices the opportunity to prepare and complete a full bollard installation using Instarmac rapid set flowable concrete and 6mm instant cold lay – replicating real-world site conditions rather than classroom theory alone. This approach allows learners to understand not just how the product works, but why certain installation methods matter for safety, durability and long-term maintenance.

One of the key areas of interest for the apprentices was the retention socket system itself. Being able to replace a damaged bollard in under five minutes, without extensive groundworks, clearly resonated. Feedback from the group highlighted how the system simplifies future maintenance, reduces disruption on the highway and improves safety for operatives carrying out replacements.

From my perspective as an Area Technical Manager at TMP, “sessions like this are invaluable. They give apprentices confidence, expose them to modern installation techniques, and help bridge the gap between training and live highways environments. Just as importantly, they show how collaboration between manufacturers, training providers and local authorities can directly support the next generation coming into our industry.”

We’re proud to support the Highways Academy and the partners involved, and we look forward to continuing to work together to help apprentices build the practical skills they’ll rely on throughout their careers.
