Mini Metro provides robust cycle lane separation in Tolworth
A compact, reboundable alternative to traditional marker posts is helping create a clearer boundary between cyclists and live traffic on Tolworth High Street.
At a glance
- Compact multi-sign-face marker post for active travel routes
- 150 mm sign face provides clear route guidance
- Highly reflective 665 mm front panel improves visibility
- Helps define the boundary between the carriageway and cycle lane
- Tested to BS EN 12767:2007 to 100:NE:4
The challenge
Active travel schemes need clear separation between cycle routes and the carriageway, but space is often limited. Marker posts must be visible enough to guide approaching drivers without creating unnecessary clutter or introducing another rigid object into the streetscape.
They also need to withstand the realities of a busy urban road. Buses, refuse vehicles and other traffic can clip conventional marker posts, leaving them damaged, difficult to see or in need of replacement.
TMP developed the Mini Metro as a more visible, robust and cost-effective alternative to traditional flat-blade markers.
A compact version of a proven design
The Mini Metro Bollard is based on TMP’s proven Metro RSRB rebound bollard, condensed into a compact marker post designed specifically for cycle lanes, shared-use paths and active travel routes.
At 960 mm tall and weighing just 3.8 kg, it provides a substantial visual marker without dominating the route. Its 150 mm sign face can display cycle route, shared path and directional symbols, while the large reflective panel improves visibility at night and in poor weather.
The reboundable construction allows the Mini Metro to flex if struck before returning upright, helping it remain visible and reducing the likelihood of replacement.
Direct installation onto concrete separators
On Tolworth High Street, the cycle lane is separated from the carriageway using two concrete kerbs laid back-to-back.
The Mini Metro units were fixed directly to the concrete using anchor bolts, creating a straightforward installation without the need for excavation. The completed scheme provides drivers with a continuous and highly visible boundary while giving cyclists greater reassurance alongside the live carriageway.
The product can also be installed using a foundation cage or a 50 x 50 mm retention socket, making it suitable for both new schemes and existing highways infrastructure.
When a retention socket is used, a damaged unit can be removed and replaced in around two to three minutes. This reduces time spent working next to live traffic and can substantially lower future maintenance and traffic management requirements.
Quietly getting on with the job
Since installation, the Tolworth Mini Metro units have continued to perform as intended, maintaining a clear separation between buses, other vehicles and cyclists.
Richard McKenna, Area Technical Manager at TMP, said:
“It is a simple product made well and offered at a good price. It is more visible and more robust than the flat-blade markers it replaces. On a highways scheme, no news is often good news – it means the product is simply getting on with the job.”
Following installations in Tolworth, Camden and Islington, interest in the Mini Metro continues to grow among London boroughs and other authorities looking for a practical marker for active travel routes.
